Shock in Mexico over ten bodies of businessmen and officials hung by cartels

Shock in Mexico after a new massacre by the cartels. This past Saturday, authorities in the state of Zacatecas discovered ten brutally murdered bodies, some of them tied up and hung from a bridge in several municipalities.

The killing has been claimed by a cell of the Sinaloa cartel through a video on social media, in which several armed and masked individuals can be seen admitting to having perpetrated the murders and threatening the State governor, David Monreal.

However, the Secretary of Security of Zacatecas has doubted the veracity of the video due to its “poorly made” content and “not very criminal” overtones. Nevertheless, the official has assured that they will find those responsible for the massacre and the line of investigation suggests that the act was perpetrated by organized crime.

Signs of torture

The bodies of the murdered belong mostly to businessmen from the city of Fresnillo, as well as a former mayor and several public workers and officials, including a firefighter. The bodies showed signs of torture, some even semi-naked and with written messages.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, assured that federal government security agencies are working to arrest those responsible, while five suspects have already been detained in connection with the incident. For his part, the current municipal president of Zacatecas, Miguel Varela, expressed his “deep consternation” and condolences for the death of the former mayor.

Varela described it as “very sad” to see what continues to happen in Mexico and Zacatecas; “it is truly outrageous that we continue to experience such situations and that many times it seems there are no answers or justice for those who need it most.”

In recent years, Zacatecas has gone from experiencing the most violent years in its history to being among the states with the lowest rates of violence. Due to its geographical position, the state is a strategic point for Mexican cartels that control areas of that state.

Mid-week, Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), reported that the state of Zacatecas consolidated itself as the second state in the country with the greatest reduction in the daily average of intentional homicide during the first half of 2026. However, organized crime violence persists with episodes like the one that occurred this Saturday throughout the country.
