The meeting between Trump and the royal family, and the consequent exchange of gifts, took place on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium facilities in New Jersey, shortly before the start of the match that the Spanish national team played against Argentina.

For Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, Saturday was their first meeting with the American president. The Kings already knew Trump as they made an official trip to the United States in 2018 during his first term. Felipe and Letizia were received by Donald and Melania Trump at the White House. A state visit was scheduled for April 21, 2020, but had to be suspended due to the pandemic. The sometimes tense relations between the Spanish government and the American president have so far prevented the realization of a state visit that was initially planned within the framework of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, in which the Spanish Crown played a decisive role.
The King and the President of the United States have met on other occasions, the last being on September 23, 2025, at the reception held in New York on the occasion of the UN General Assembly.

Before the Spain-Argentina match, the King also had the opportunity to greet the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, whom he had already met in Mexico City on June 25, a day before attending the Guadalajara stadium to watch the group stage match between Spain and Uruguay.
