The Ombudsman urges to guarantee school colonies and calls for regulation to Education

The Ombudsman has issued a resolution urging the guarantee of school camps for their educational value, essential in the right to education, and calls on the Government to establish a framework that allows their implementation with guarantees for the workers.

In its resolution, the Ombudsman recalls that these activities are part of the educational project of the centers and play a fundamental role in the personal, social, and educational development of the students. It also highlights that they constitute a tool for equal opportunities, especially for children with fewer economic resources.

Currently, more than half of schools and institutes have canceled camps for the next school year in protest of their working conditions. In these centers, families have received letters announcing that neither camps nor extracurricular outings will be organized due to the conditions under which they are carried out as part of the labor dispute maintained with the Department of Education.

Families from the Costa i Llobera school institute expressed their disagreement with the cancellation of camps by the management and took the complaint to the Ombudsman.

Among the proposed measures, Ombudsman Esther Giménez-Salinas requests that mechanisms for recognition and compensation be established for teachers participating in outings and camps, so that these activities can be developed within an appropriate organizational and labor framework, without relying exclusively on the personal commitment of the teachers.

The institution considers that the protection of children’s rights is unavoidable, but at the same time believes that progress must be made in improving the labor rights of teachers.
