The latest proposals from STEPV, the majority union among teachers in non-university public education in the Valencian Community, predict a new school year as intense as the previous one. After holding its National Council, held this Monday in Polinyà de Xúquer, it has decided to carry out a series of measures, some more striking than others, to maintain the reivindicative discourse of last year, in which an indefinite teachers’ strike was carried out in an atmosphere of tense negotiation between the Department of Education and the teachers. They explain that theirs is a “progressive, territorialized and sustained strategy,” in which they will combine mobilization, public denunciation, pedagogy with families, and institutional pressure.

Their proposal includes concrete actions, and the first begins on September 1, when the teachers return and they propose to welcome them with welcome posters, information about the mobilizations, and invitations to participate in the school assembly.
On the 9th of the same month, Thursday of student return, they also want to distribute posters and publicize their reivindicative actions, mainly aimed at families, whom they seek to engage even more with their objectives. And without waiting for the school year to get underway, they plan a demonstration for the first Saturday after the return to school, September 12, in the three provincial capitals.

Much of their proposals are actions that seek notoriety and public relevance, and in that context it is understood that they propose, for example, “taking advantage of local festivals to make the conflict visible” or “actions linked to the Cycling Tour,” which runs through the Valencian Community from August 27 (Alcossebre-Castelló section) until the 30th of the same month (La Vila Joiosa-Sierra de Aitana).

Another of their ideas is the replication of the “Catalonia model,” of strikes by counties or inter-county type, as was done during the protests this spring, chaining territorial strikes and others of a general type. In Catalonia, in fact, the Educational Assembly of Catalonia has already agreed to strike on September 8 in public centers, the first day of school.
Likewise, STEPV also talks about participating in public acts of the Valencian government, calling cycling marches, or asking municipalities for help through the approval of support motions in municipal plenary sessions. And, after the success of the last mobilization, they consider that the protagonism must fall on the organized teachers because “we understand that the teaching workers are the central axis of any struggle and any negotiation and decision about this.”
