Catalonia is experiencing its third heat wave of the summer, which will last at least until Wednesday

The Civil Protection of the Generalitat has activated the Procicat Plan alert for heat in anticipation of the forecast by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) of the start of the third heat wave of the summer this Sunday, which will last at least until Wednesday and will be intense in the counties of northwest Catalonia and with intense nighttime heat in the counties of the southern coast and pre-coast.

The episode is expected to affect during the afternoon of this Sunday the counties of Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà and Vall d’Aran (Lleida) and is expected to reach its peak on Wednesday the 15th, Civil Protection has reported in a statement.

For Monday and Tuesday, the main impact will occur in the Ponent area (Lleida), while the warnings for nighttime heat are concentrated in the counties of Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Camp, Tarragonès and, especially, Baix Ebre and Montsià (Tarragona).

This episode will be accompanied by a phenomenon of suspended Saharan dust over much of the territory and Civil Protection asks municipalities to provide cool places and air-conditioned rooms if necessary.

Given the high forest fire risk situation, with 72 municipalities at extreme fire risk this Sunday and high danger in another 187, the Firefighters of the Generalitat have established an operational reinforcement in all regions.

A reinforcement is planned to have more Basic Intervention Units (UBI), with 3 or 4 additional per region depending on the risk level, as well as the opening of Volunteer Firefighter stations, in addition to reinforcing the Control Rooms and the Central Firefighter Room with additional personnel.

Additionally, a reinforcement of the Forest Action Group (Graf), command structures, aerial support guard, and activation of personnel from the Active Forest Prevention Teams (Epaf) is guaranteed.

The firefighters warn that under current conditions rapid fires can occur that may launch secondary outbreaks and maintain monitoring and extinction devices in the fires of Guimerà (Lleida), which is stabilized, and in the controlled fires of Camarasa (Lleida), Sentmenat (Barcelona), Pla de Manlleu (Barcelona), Carme (Barcelona), Navarcles (Barcelona) and la Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona).
