A few hours after the entry of agents from the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard into the PSOE headquarters, on Ferraz street in Madrid, the Senate approved a motion from the PP calling for elections and censuring the Government’s “behaviors” regarding the various corruption cases surrounding Pedro Sánchez’s closest circle and under investigation by the Justice system. The initiative passed with the support of 146 senators (PP, Vox, UPN, and Canary Coalition), while Junts and PNV abstained.
The motion is not binding, so it has no legal effects, but it is politically relevant because it allows parliamentary groups to take a stance. In this sense, the motion was of interest to see the position adopted by Junts and PNV, two parties very critical of Pedro Sánchez who see the legislature as exhausted but have not yet taken the step to support a motion of no confidence led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo to call elections.
In this regard, the initiative was born just after the indictment of Zapatero in the Plus Ultra case became known, but it was finally voted on shortly after the UCO entered Ferraz in the Leire Díez case, within the framework of an investigation by the National Court.
Specifically, the motion, presented by the popular senator Pepa Pardo, has four points, but the first one censures two “behaviors” of the Government: “Not assuming political responsibilities, of any kind, for any of the serious corruption cases affecting it”; and, “triggering, in order to divert attention from its serious political responsibilities for corruption, a methodical strategy of tension and poisoning of political debate, and permanent conflict with the other branches of the State, the judicial and the legislative.”
In point two, the motion states that the position of the Prime Minister to “resist regardless of the conditions required by a parliamentary democracy system” has led to a situation of “serious political crisis causing serious harm to the normal functioning, stability, and strength of the State institutions.” In point three, it is stated that the Government is “ineffective in fulfilling its obligations in the service of the general interest” and criticizes “the erratic and wrong decisions of the Government itself.”
Finally, in point four, the Government is urged to call elections “putting an end, through the procedures provided in the Constitution, to the current deadlock situation and thus allowing the formation of a new Government.”
The Senate extends the Koldo case Investigation Commission by six months
The PP has used its absolute majority in the Senate to extend the investigation commission on all branches of the Koldo case for at least another six months, which has already been working for more than two years and has hosted a total of 106 witnesses. This was approved this Wednesday in the Senate Plenary.
