Two dead and about twenty injured in a multiple hit-and-run in Leipzig

Two people died and at least another twenty were injured, two of them seriously, in a multiple hit-and-run this Monday in the German city of Leipzig, in the east of the country, according to police confirmation. Around 16:45 hours, a gray Volkswagen SUV entered at full speed into a central pedestrian area around Augustusplatz and drove 500 meters running over people. The driver was arrested at the scene.

Leipzig police reported the arrest on the social network X: “A car ran over several pedestrians on Grimmaische street before fleeing. The driver has been arrested and no longer poses a danger.” The mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, said in a video in the digital edition of the local newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung: “We do not know the motivation. We know nothing about the culprit.”

The newspaper Bild states that the perpetrator of the hit-and-run “showed signs of mental instability at the time of his arrest.” According to the NTV channel, the detainee is a German citizen.

On its website, Radio Leipzig reported that the vehicle that ran over the victims had a person on top of the car. “According to eyewitnesses, it seemed as if a girl had held on tightly” to the vehicle, the station indicated. In the images, a large deployment with numerous officers and about ten ambulances can be seen in the area where the hit-and-run occurred, where psychologists arrived to assist those affected and the witnesses.
