Victims of the DANA decline to participate this Monday in a meeting with the Generalitat

The Association of Victims of the DANA October 29, 2024 and the Association of Fatal Victims Dana 29-O have decided to decline the invitation to participate in the meeting convened for this Monday, May 4, by the Directorate General for Victim and Affected Care and the Commissioner for Recovery of the Generalitat.

In a joint statement, both groups explain that their decision, which has the support of the Cler (Local Emergency and Reconstruction Committees), responds to a “collective reflection” and “concern” about an agenda that they consider “does not respond to the real and urgent needs of the citizens affected by the DANA of October 29, 2024.”

The meeting is convened by the Directorate General for Victim and Affected Care and the Commissioner for Recovery

“We consider it especially serious that, a year and a half after the tragedy, the meeting continues to focus mainly on organizational issues, institutional presentation, and image, without incorporating fundamental matters that directly affect the daily lives of the affected people,” they state.

They assure that the agenda of the convocation for the presentation of the Permanent Working Table of the Commissioner for Recovery does not include “priority and urgent issues” for the victims, while one of the central points of the convocation is the presentation of the ‘I International Conference on Care for Disaster Victims’.

According to the statement, issues such as the situation of the DANA rental aid and the uncertainty of many families regarding the coming months, or the update on the status of aid to commerce and affected self-employed persons, are not included.

Also not included are aspects such as the state of educational infrastructures and the situation of affected centers; the situation of elevators and parking lots, real planning for future emergencies; the review of emergency and alert protocols; the situation of public services and community mental health; or policies for climate change adaptation and population protection.

They state that “the citizens need concrete answers, useful information, security, resources, and effective commitments, not spaces mainly oriented to institutional projection or a possible communication and image strategy.”

“Victims and affected people do not need to be used as institutional scenery,” they state

“Victims and affected people do not need to be used as institutional scenery while basic issues of reconstruction, housing, prevention, and protection remain unresolved,” they add.

For the signatories, this situation “adds a fundamental element that we cannot ignore: the regional administration has still not assumed the political responsibilities derived from the negligent management of October 29, 2024.”

<p“A year and a half later, the same political leaders who were not up to the situation required by the Valencian people in a moment of extreme emergency continue to be part of the Consell,” they recall.

They also consider it “unacceptable” that the president of the Generalitat, Pérez Llorca, “continues without asking Carlos Mazón for his deputy certificate and maintains political protection that citizens understand less and less.”
