From Sharon Stone to Lenny Kravitz: when sex can wait

Heartbreak, frustration, spirituality, loss, or simply the will to wait for the right person. The reasons for consciously choosing celibacy are many, and Sharon Stone (Pennsylvania, 1958) has just revealed hers. At 68 years old, the star of Basic Instinct claims she has not had sex for a long time because she only wants to do it again if she falls in love.

The actress spoke openly about this decision this week on Mayim Bialik’s breakdown, the podcast of fellow actress Mayim Bialik. “I’m a very good girlfriend, but I haven’t had a boyfriend in a long time,” she admitted before reflecting on a love life in which, according to her own admission, there has been practically everything. “I’ve had bad boyfriends and good boyfriends. I’ve had good luck, bad luck, and no luck at all,” she said.

An experience that has ended up changing her priorities and has led the actress to remain celibate for a while, convinced that she only wants to share her intimacy with someone she truly loves. Now that her three children have grown up, Stone says she is looking for a “partner” and not just someone to have sex with. “I’m a little bored of that,” she clarified.

Married and divorced twice, first to producer Michael Greenburg and later to journalist Phil Bronstein, the American admits, however, that she still hopes to find a relationship different from the previous ones. “I’ve had loves in my life, but I don’t think I’ve had the great love of my life,” she said.

Those who did find that great love were Karl Lagerfeld and Céline Dion, although the loss of their respective partners deeply affected their later relationship with sex and love. The German designer, who died in 2019, said he went nearly 30 years without having sex after the death in 1989 of Jacques de Bascher, who had been his partner for almost two decades.

A similar case is that of the Canadian singer, whose love life was inevitably linked to René Angélil, who was also her manager for much of her career. They married in 1994 and stayed together until his death in 2016 from cancer. Since then, she has not been publicly known to have a new partner. Three years after losing her husband, the artist admitted she still missed
intimacy and affection. “I miss being touched. I miss being hugged. I miss being told I’m beautiful,” she confessed on the Today show.

That longing has coexisted, however, since then with the decision not to take steps to start a new relationship. “I don’t date. I don’t have a boyfriend,” she later explained on Watch what happens live . Despite that lack of romantic initiative, the 58-year-old singer does not close the door to falling in love again.

The search for deeper connections was also what led Lenny Kravitz to give up sex more than a decade ago. The American musician chose voluntary celibacy convinced that he did not want to share his intimacy again until he found the right person. “It’s something spiritual,” he has explained on several occasions. That decision does not mean, in any case, having given up on love. Kravitz has admitted that he would like to have a serious relationship again, although he admits that so many years alone have ended up strengthening habits and a way of life that he finds increasingly difficult to give up.

Before starting this particular spiritual journey, the American Woman singer was linked to some of the most famous women in show business. He was married between 1987 and 1993 to Lisa Bonet, mother of his daughter Zoë, and later had relationships with Vanessa Paradis and Nicole Kidman. He was also engaged to model Adriana Lima in 2003 and years later was romantically linked to model Barbara Fialho.

But not all paths leading to celibacy necessarily pass through the territories of the heart. In Jennifer Lawrence’s case, the reasons were much more down-to-earth. The actress confessed in 2018 that she was practically celibate by her own decision due to her fear of germs and especially of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. “I don’t usually have sex because I have a phobia of germs,” Lawrence explained then, describing herself as “almost mysophobic.”

Her fear conditioned physical contact to such an extent that even a simple handshake could be uncomfortable for her. That phase is behind her in the sentimental field and shortly after she began her relationship with gallerist Cooke Maroney, whom she married in 2019 and with whom she has started a family.
