A 67-year-old woman has drowned in Felanitx (Mallorca) after being trapped under a car during a heavy downpour. The woman slipped and became immobilized under the vehicle at a time when it was raining heavily. The water was over two palms deep and the woman was immobilized at a moment when there was a strong current of water due to the intense rains. Some neighbors who passed by the area shortly after found the woman’s body and could do nothing to help her.

The Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation and a coroner immediately traveled to the municipality. The main hypothesis the investigators are considering is that it was an accidental fall caused by the intensity of the rains. The incident occurred at a time when a strong downpour swept Mallorca from east to west and left heavy rains. The fallen water caused numerous incidents on the island, although none as serious as the one recorded in Felanitx, with the death of this woman.

Emergency services attended more than a hundred incidents in just over an hour, mostly due to fallen trees, traffic cuts, and flooding in premises and garages. The Firefighters carried out 85 interventions, all of a minor nature, including the removal of trees from roads, floods, and the rescue of a person in Calvià.
Banyalbufar, Esporles, and Port des Canonge were some of the areas that concentrated the most actions. The force of the wind caused trees to fall on different roads in Mallorca, hindering traffic. Emergency teams had to act at various points on the Serra road, as well as on the Valldemossa road and the main road of Esporles.

The airport had to suspend operations for a few minutes
The storm also had consequences at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where some facilities were affected. The metro connecting the university campus with the Balearic capital was flooded and stopped working, so the UIB reopened some facilities that were closed so that students who could not return from campus could take shelter.
The storm also had a major impact on Son Sant Joan airport, where operations were suspended for safety reasons for a few minutes. The closure caused delays since the storm began on days of high air traffic, with Mallorca still in high tourist season.
