Twenty new literary releases to enjoy this new school year

Highly anticipated second novels, such as those by Alana S. Portero, Eva Comas-Arnal, or Andrea Abreu; long-running literary sagas, like those offered by Dolores Redondo or Martín Caparrós; authors with a literary fixation like Jon Bilbao and the seaside house that appears in almost all of his literary universe; works with a historical background, such as those by Aniol Florensa or Pere Antoni Pons, and even a debut, that of Cristina Genebat. This rentrée literary season comes loaded with highly anticipated readings and names that everyone marks on their calendar.

• Dolores Redondo. Todas las noches, todas las ciudades (Destino / Columna)

Nash returns, the emblematic forensic psychologist that Redondo has made one of her main protagonists. The reader will meet her father, the writer Benedict Newman. When the police unexpectedly arrive at his house and question him about a series of crimes identical to those described in his latest book, he suffers a collapse. Upon waking, Newman is different: he speaks and acts like Colt Star, the detective from his novels. October 21

• Andrea Abreu. Pajaritos preñados (Anagrama)

The long-awaited new novel from the Canarian author arrives. Set on the islands, it follows Cathaysa, a teenager who lives with the feeling that everything happens too fast and yet nothing ever changes. While reflecting on this, everything seems to break into pieces. September 2

• Alana S. Portero. Cosamala (Seix Barral)

• Santiago Lorenzo. Contenta (Blackie Books)

Cecilia has a mission: to record a promotional video about a municipality. The City Council has hired her. The problem is that she finds the town horrible and doesn’t know how to fill 45 minutes of reportage. Luckily, things are better in love. October 7

• Jacobo Bergareche. Tío grande (Libros del Asteroide)

Every year, Bergareche organizes a mus tournament in memory of his brother Roque. On the afternoon it is held, he dares to tell Amadou, the young man in charge of the venue, the story of his brother, who was murdered in Africa. Third installment of the series starring Pibe Rivarola, this time set around the death of Carlos Gardel in a plane crash. When this happens, his fans start to commit suicide in Buenos Aires. Rivarola tries to write about these romantic deaths but ends up entangled with unionists. Additionally, a senator is murdered for denouncing infamous maneuvers. August 26

• Carmen Mola. Los huérfanos (Planeta)

In Belfast, three children grew up in an orphanage where violence was the only way to survive. That hell made them brothers and, years later, owners of a criminal empire that stretches from Ireland to the Costa del Sol. September 9

• Jon Bilbao. Esta es tu casa (Impedimenta)

The writer has been building a literary world for years with a house at its center: a family home in a fishing village in the north, visible from the other side of the estuary, standing on a limestone massif full of caves. In this work, he gathers nine stories that orbit around that house and those who inhabit it, covet it, or fear it. August 31

• Julia Navarro. Una familia moderna (Plaza & Janés / Rosa dels Vents)

Two years after her last novel, Navarro returns with the portrait of a septuagenarian couple, Martha and Thomas, who begin to realize that the world they knew has ceased to exist. • Cristina Genebat. Sorra (La Magrana)

Actress, playwright, and translator, Cristina Genebat debuts as a novelist with this narrative that won the first Lo Somni prize, a story in three intertwined times with a girl discovering the world, a young dancer in a difficult moment, and a mature writer who must overcome her fears. September 10

• Ramon Mas. Sempre és massa tard (L’Altra Editorial)

After waking up on the outskirts of the city without knowing what happened, Nofre’s last memory is having gone out for a run. He tries to return home and instead of a few hours, fifteen years have passed. Ramon Mas faces a mystery, but above all the tragedy of an involuntary abandoner. September 2

• Flavia Company. La clau / la llave (Navona)

In 2018, Flavia Company decided to start a trip around the world with barely a backpack, a rag doll, and a yoga mat, a journey that lasted about four years including, besides the pandemic, many anecdotes, surprises, and reflections that she now narrates under her own name – in 2020, her heteronym Haru already published a primordial story – also in Spanish. • Pere Antoni Pons. Les conseqüències (Proa)

A Mallorcan writer and journalist investigates a mystery that begins with the visit to the island of two SS members after Himmler’s trip to Montserrat in 1940. Pons mixes historical facts – such as Francoism’s welcome of the Nazis after World War II and the supposed lists of xuetes to send them to extermination camps – with reflections on the Spanish-ization and touristification of Mallorca, with a narrator in sentimental crisis and with fatherhood on edge, in a thrilling thriller. • Llort. Short (Clandestina / Crims.cat)

After 13 novels, Llort debuts in short narrative with 37 dark stories of varying length that concentrate the humor and darkness of their author with a touch of discomfort as a common thread. September 14

• Eva Comas-Arnal. Nit blava a Ginebra (Proa)

Comas-Arnal continues narratively exploring the life of Mercè Rodoreda after her Mercè i Joan, now with the brilliant writer situated in Geneva after being hit by a tram, which leads her to reconsider her relationship with Joan Prat (Armand Obiols) and with writing. October 7

• Aniol Florensa Tort. L’illa de les barretines (La Campana)

In 1790, a militia of Catalan volunteers led by the Tortosí Pere d’Alberni is sent to the remote island of Nutka, near the current city of Vancouver, where he will experience a series of misadventures narrated by a writer named Aniol Florensa obeying the last wish of his deceased father.
