The Last of the Mohicans, written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826, is an adventure novel set in 1757 during the French and Indian War that shows the gradual disappearance of the traditions and lineage of Native Americans in the face of the relentless arrival of European civilization. Well, today the Mohicans are us: the Europeans. And the code of honor, human rights, what we are as Europe, community harmony, and basic justice in the Union is being represented by Spain. And from there comes much of the attacks and disinformation campaigns.

The Ceuta issue has been a settling of scores not only with Pedro Sánchez but with Spain as the last stronghold of social democracy (not in terms of right and left, but of social state). The EU annoys the new authoritarian elites. Its bureaucracy is the highest social democratic expression: too much state and regulation, too social everything. And if Sánchez falls, the last social democratic country falls: the last Mohican. If social democracy falls in the EU (and it is close), the institutional, political, social, and historical meaning of this macrostructure is lost. From the social EU to the EU as a fortress. Social collapse as a milestone of the new authoritarian elites and the old European elites, although many of them, unintentionally and within the great algorithmic confusion, are joining the enemy like Meloni’s Italy. The EU is under siege. And this goes beyond Algeria, the Sahara, and the old Moroccan conflict. The Ceuta issue brings the great debate of the future: work, the new servitude, meekness, ultimately, the Magnifica Humanitas.
Italy settles scores not only with Sánchez but with Spain as the last stronghold of social democracy
Therefore, the Ceuta issue is not just about defending values or the old liberal framework. It refers us to the great challenges of these modern times: on one hand, wealth, poverty, and their distribution, and on the other, the way authoritarian elites propose to resolve this challenge. There will be migrants as long as there is work in the EU, because so far demography and employment explain our lives. However, the EU’s retreat is synonymous with the capitulation of the old right. It is the door for, once the EU collapses, the great European market to be deregulated according to new authoritarian interests. That is what it is about: migrants are nothing but job seekers. We must bring the future to the present: a son of Egyptian immigrants, Abdul El-Sayed, is the electoral surprise in the United States, as was earlier the mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani. Immigrants in the U.S. are technically the new democratic socialism. The EU has this right in front of its nose.
This is not about public policies. This is about real power. This is the fight in which Spain must continue to take steps forward without complexes. Michigan and New York are the replacement of the old Democrats, just as the authoritarianism of Donald Trump replaced the conservatism of the Bushes. In the Hamptons, the new democratic socialism was not expected, just as in 2012, in Texas, the MAGA cyclone was not foreseen. The era is no longer that of the Obamas. All that broke with Lehman Brothers and this extratime are tears in the rain like Biden. The engine of the new democratic socialism is the concept of the State, which is the only thing that stabilizes, not the market. The State considered as if each family were a State. Society wants a life project and to have its problems solved.

Trump lives off it without results and the new democratic socialism as its alter ego goes straight in that line, which no longer rhymes with the Democratic elites. The role of the State, who holds power, and for what purpose the State exists. Before, real power was in the City; today Western capitalism wants to compete with authoritarian or Chinese capitalism. Real power now lies in the fact that to compete with the new authoritarian elites, there must be new democratic elites. In democracy, nothing is written. The step from being the last Mohican to becoming the first of the new ones is just winning an election. Building a new momentum. As in the novel, “nature gives us courage, but it is circumstances that teach us how to use it.” And the Ceuta issue is not a problem for Spaniards, but for all Europeans. From here we talk about everything else: starting with the life projects of everyone.

The new elites dominate, the old elites retreat. If the last social democratic bastion disappears, the entente between the left and right sides of the system, the Christian Democrats, who were the founders of the European Union as a social artifact, disappears.
For the axis to shift to a struggle between old rights and new rights for the eviction of the EU, Pedro Sánchez must fall. The Ceuta issue is also about that. Replacement of elites, collapse of social democracy and of the European Union itself.
