Two U.S. military personnel participating in the African Lion 2026 military exercises were reported missing on Saturday night in a training area of Cap Draa, near the city of Tan-Tan, in southern Morocco.

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM, based in Stuttgart, Germany) reported on Sunday that U.S., Moroccan forces and other resources linked to African Lion immediately launched coordinated search and rescue operations, including land, air, and maritime means. “Our priority is the service members involved and their families,” the statement reads.

For its part, the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco (FAR) detailed on their Facebook account that the military personnel went missing on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. (local time), in a cliff area in Cap Draa, and added that investigations have been opened to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

The current edition of the African Lion military exercises, the largest annual training in Africa led by the United States, began on April 20 and will run until May 8 in various locations such as Agadir, Tan-Tan, Benguerir, Taroudant, Tifnit, and Dajla, with the participation of more than 40 countries.
