Two climbers attended to Jonathan Andic after the father's fall

On December 14, 2024, Isak and Jonathan Andic were not alone on the Montserrat mountain. Father and son parked their vehicles in the Collbató parking lot from which the Les Feixades path starts, a slippery but simple trail that connects the Salnitre caves with the Montserrat monastery. After barely ten minutes, the 71-year-old businessman fell into the void and died from the severe injuries caused by the impact. The son, who was released on Tuesday after posting a bail of one million euros and is accused of homicide, took four minutes to make the first call and it was to his father’s partner, Estefanía Knuth. Two minutes later, he alerted 112 to ask for help. After half an hour, two climbers who had been practicing sport in the massif appeared on the trail and approached Jonathan, alerted by his cries of distress, according to La Vanguardia from sources familiar with the investigation.

At first, the now accused of homicide thought they were two police officers approaching to help him. Then he discovered they were climbers who wanted to help him, seeing him disoriented. To the point that one of them took the mobile phone from which Jonathan was trying to give directions to the 112 operator about where he was and helped locate the place.

Those climbers then accompanied Jonathan Andic to retrace the small section of the path he had taken with his father and practically halfway through the route they crossed paths with one of the first Mossos d’Esquadra of citizen security from Martorell dispatched to the place.

The account of the two climbers does not appear in any police report. In the opinion of the investigators, it lacked value for the case because they were not witnesses to the event and because they made contact with the victim’s son almost half an hour after the fall. A statement was taken from the cave guard, who, due to her location at that moment, assured she had seen or heard nothing. The testimony of a local Collbató police officer who was at the scene after the accident also appears in the file.

The judge arrived at that position as a substitute in June 2025 and, unlike her predecessor, she quickly interpreted the clues shown by the Martorell investigators in the same way as the police: Jonathan Andic was not telling what really happened that morning when his father fell.

They showed her the images of the footprint from which the richest man in Catalonia allegedly fell into the void. And the technical report already prepared by the mountain unit police warning that those marks could only be made by stepping with intensity to simulate a slip. They warned her of the contradictions in the son’s statements and the judge, unlike her predecessor, with the approval of prosecutor Teresa Yoldi, authorized the telephone interception of the suspect. She also signed the order to seize the mobile phone that Jonathan Andic was carrying on September 9 when he was intercepted by a plainclothes police officer who, after stopping him and identifying himself, sat in the passenger seat of his vehicle and asked for the phone. It was the same police officer who early Tuesday morning knocked on Jonathan Andic’s home door and his wife, Paula Nata, informed him that he was arrested for his father’s death and granted him the right to call a lawyer. Andic called Sebastián de Juan, one of the lawyers working in his defense under Cristóbal Martell. He finished dressing, left the mobile inside the apartment, and accompanied the police officer to the Martorell police station, where he went through one of the worst moments of the day: the booking. That posing in the adjacent room of the police station’s basement cells where a police officer took several photographs of his face and full body and took his fingerprints for his police record.

In the circle, the victim's green anorak can still be seen, which along with his glasses and watch, remained in that first section of the embankment. At the top, with the arrow, the footprint that caught the attention of the Mossos d’Esquadra investigators when they arrived at the trail can be seen. A mark that the judge states in her prison order was intentional to simulate a slip.

The Andic case has only just begun, judicially speaking. The dilapidated Martorell courts, in the basements of some apartment blocks, will be the scene of many comings and goings in the coming months. Throughout yesterday, in Cristóbal Martell’s offices, the file was being scrutinized with a magnifying glass, whose secrecy was lifted after the arrest. And the request to the court was being drafted for the instructor of the proceedings, who has carried the weight of the investigation, to appear in court to defend those clues against Jonathan Andic for which the defense already has a response.
