Tourist seriously injured after being charged by an angry bison in Yellowstone

A tourist has been hospitalized since last Friday due to the serious injuries caused by the charge of an angry bison in Yellowstone National Park, United States. The animal, weighing about 900 kilos and visibly agitated, threw a man who was watching the large mammal with his grandson into the air.

A professional photographer was able to capture the scene live, in the Bridge Bay camping area, south of Fishing Bridge. “I was trying to record images of the bison when it started behaving aggressively. I wouldn’t have expected something like that,” explained Mike MacLeod, based in Montana, in statements to the American media Cowboy State Daily.

A photographer was able to capture the incident: “You could tell something was going to happen”

According to his account, the animal first headed towards a group of minors who were taking photographs, who managed to disperse in time. “Then it kept moving through the camp while people were shouting to warn each other,” he said. Minutes later, the bison focused its attention on the grandfather and grandson. “They were quite far away, walking along the road, and suddenly the bison started running towards them,” he said.

After seeming to calm down, the animal became active again and charged at a vehicle before turning towards the two people. “You could tell something was going to happen,” said the photographer. The man tried to take refuge among the trees, without success. The bison insisted and caught him. “It hooked him with the left horn at hip height and threw him into the air. He did a perfect flip and fell on his side,” MacLeod recounted.

The young man managed to escape, but the animal stayed with the victim, shaking its head. “I thought it was going to gore him on the ground, so I ran towards the bison, shouted, and tried to look as big as possible to distract it,” he explained. Other witnesses imitated his reaction, which finally made the animal move away. Those present helped the injured man until the arrival of emergency services, who evacuated him with serious injuries, mainly to the hip and a leg.

The National Park Service (NPS) has not released official details about the incident. According to the grandson’s testimony, cited by MacLeod, the man has “serious injuries” and his condition remains critical.

This is the second incident between humans and bison in Yellowstone so far in 2026. Experts point out that these animals can become especially aggressive during the rutting season, between June and September. The photographer emphasized that, unlike other cases, the people involved kept the recommended distance, about 25 meters from this type of animal. “I didn’t see anyone get too close. This bison was angry and charged at everything.”
