As effective in front of a camera as behind it, and with enough years of experience to present a film in a way that does not go unnoticed, last Thursday Tom Cruise arrived in person at the main cinema of the Warner Brothers studios in Los Angeles to share with the press the trailer of Digger. The film, which according to the studio has cost 125 million dollars but unofficial data assures it has already reached 200, marks Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s return to the screens four years after Bardo, and promises an unusual combination of delirious comedy, science fiction, and political satire.

In the images that the studio publicly released on Monday, Cruise can be seen completely transformed into the most powerful man in the world, who perhaps deliberately looks more like Sam Rockwell than the superstar we all know. The Mexican filmmaker, who is working at full speed in London to have the film ready for its world premiere in the first days of October, sent a filmed message in which he expressed: “Since I finished The Revenant I have had an obsession that has accompanied me all these years. I knew who this character was, how he spoke, how he seduced people. But it took me 10 years to complete the film because I was not looking for a story but the right way to tell it. It is absurd, it is dangerous, but very funny, because the source of the best comedy is tragedy,” he shared.

When the lights came on, Cruise participated in a question and answer session in which he told of his fascination with the two-time Oscar-winning director: “I was fascinated by Amores perros when I saw it 25 years ago. I was impressed by the work Chivo did there with the camera, the performances, the design, the color. But many years passed until we met. Seven years ago he brought me this project he had been working on for a couple of years and then we continued developing it together. He never did anything like this before, and neither did I,” he assured.
