We form a society very prone to fuss, volatile apocalypse, and insubstance. As if our only form of ethics consisted of feeling bad, blaming ourselves for a while, flagellating ourselves another, and starting over. The worst of these days has been the data of Spanish students aged 15 and 16 in the PISA report. It shows a notable drop in core subjects such as reading comprehension, mathematics, and science. Several causes are pointed out: dependence on screens, little interest in reading, expansion of artificial intelligence, related to a way of learning that, like the rest, devalues the value of effort.

How strange that the kids have turned out like this, right? With the good examples we have given them by asking for a book, a record, or a jacket on Amazon. Without moving our butt and making an effort to catch the bus or take a walk to a bookstore, a record store, or a hat shop. How supportive we are of neighborhood consumption when they bring the shopping home from the supermarket, not to mention when we buy cheap t-shirts regardless of how or what is paid for them.

How do these boys and girls not make an effort after seeing us download an app to have Chinese or Indian food delivered by bike because we were too lazy to make some omelets? Didn’t they see us whining on social media when they closed that cinema, that concert hall, or the winery we hadn’t been to in 30 years? Didn’t they learn anything from our effort when they saw us scroll on the phone to arrange a hookup? Didn’t they see us making an effort in series marathons?

It’s incredible. We didn’t make them junkies so they would read little and not understand what they read. We didn’t show them that if we don’t remember a silly thing, we immediately look it up on the phone to have the data and forget it right away to have this disappointment. Didn’t they see us teleworking in pajamas or how the algorithm chose the music for us? Weren’t they aware of our effort to defend the values we believed in, signing all those manifestos on the iPhone without going down to protest in the street? Kids, we didn’t put a phone in your hands while pushing you in a stroller or so you wouldn’t bother in the restaurant for this huge disappointment.
