August started in July in Torrevieja. Let me explain: the first Low Festival held in the tourist city in the south of Alicante, “stolen” from Benidorm this year, opens the festive-musical program of the city for the month of August, but it was inaugurated yesterday, July 31, Friday.
Until Sunday, August 2, tomorrow, more than 50 groups will perform on the four stages of Antonio Soria park. Kasabian, The Hives, Fangoria (yes, you read that right), Dani Fernández or Editors, among others, headline the festival, although the most anticipated event arrives with Love of Lesbian, who take the stage at ‘Low’ as part of their farewell tour; there will be tears tonight by the Mediterranean. Alongside them, a lineup featuring artists such as Ginebras, Ladilla Rusa, Ultraligera, Natalia Lacunza, Carlos Ares, or Iván Ferreiro.

Meanwhile, in Alicante, the summer music program started in July continues. On August 21, the Rabasa multi-space will host a special format combining I Love Reggaeton with Nostalgia Milenial, an event that will bring together artists of classic reggaeton like Juan Magán, Cali y el Dandee, or José de Rico, alongside names linked to the musical culture of the 2000s, assuming that exists.
The next day, August 22, I Love The 90s will arrive, one of the biggest shows dedicated to 90s pop and dance, someone thought that was worth it. The lineup will feature artists considered “iconic” by the organization, such as 2 Unlimited and Daisy Dee, as well as a new pop stage with groups like Amistades Peligrosas or Viceversa.
The cycle will close on August 29 with a concert by Hombres G at the bullring, one of the most enduring bands of Spanish pop rock. The Madrid group will review their “classics,” which have withstood the test of time despite the complexity of their lyrics, such as Devuélveme a mi chica, Marta tiene un marcapasos, or El ataque de las chicas cocodrilo. Some think that neither they are at the age to sing those things anymore nor most of their audience to listen to them, but it must be applauded that they can afford to sell tickets at 56.50 euros. There must be something special about it, as the saying goes.
From August 7 to 11, the Moors and Christians festivals take place in Elx. Declared of Regional Tourist Interest, they inaugurate the intense festive calendar of August in the city. For several days, the groups fill the streets with color, music, and spectacular parades that recreate the history of the city.
On August 8, the spectacular Moorish Entry is celebrated from 8 p.m. The next day, the historic Embassies act takes place at 10 p.m. in the Altamira Palace, where the Moorish Embassy and the Christian Embassy are performed with the symbolic delivery of the city to King Jaume I. And on August 10, the Christian Entry arrives, also starting at 8 p.m. along the traditional route. A show that combines the sound of music bands with an impressive display of costumes and pomp.

Of course, there are other towns in Alicante that boast their Moors and Christians festivals in August. Take note: Cocentaina and Aspe coincide from August 7 to 11; the Alicante neighborhood of Altozano celebrates them from the 12th to the 16th; in Xixona they are from the 20th to the 24th, and in Aigües from the 21st to the 30th. There is plenty to choose from, but it’s not something to overdo either.
But if there is an event deeply rooted in the soul of Elche, it is the Misteri d’Elx. From August 11 to 15, the masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity declared by UNESCO and one of the oldest medieval theatrical performances in Europe continues to be held on its original stage: the Basilica of Santa María.
The performances begin with the general rehearsals with entry on August 11 and 12 at 10:30 p.m. and on August 13 at 5:30 p.m. On the 14th, starting at 6 p.m., La Vespra, the first part of the performance, on August 15 at 10 a.m., the procession-burial of the Virgin through the streets of the historic center, and on the 15th at 6 p.m., La Festa, the second part of the sacred drama. For pyrotechnics lovers, on the night of August 13, an event difficult to describe takes place in Elx. The Nit de l’Albà transforms the city’s sky into a huge light and sound show in which thousands of palm fireworks are launched from all over the city. Then comes the frenzy of La Carretillà, a pyrotechnic battle so crazy that now it is mandatory to take the carretillero course, which consists of explaining for two hours to candidates how to handle gunpowder without being too wild. You have to pass it to access the enclosure during the celebration. This San Fermín of firecrackers takes place from 12:15 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. in the enclosed area of the Hort del Monjo parking lot.

But not everything is tradition and pyrotechnics in the millenary city of palms. Coinciding with the start of its Moors and Christians, on August 7 a concert program begins that will take place in the parking lot of the Miguel Hernández University. That day MVRK and Juicy Bae perform, young Spanish singers who stand out in urban music. The next day, August 8, it’s the turn of Siloé and Neverland Bari. Sidecars, one of the most established Spanish rock bands (a way to call them older), will perform on August 9.
The program will continue on August 11 with Celtas Cortos, still going strong 40 years later. On August 12, it’s Rigoberta Bandini’s turn, who hasn’t been seen much lately. Finally, on the 13th, OBK will perform, a “national reference,” according to the organization, which does not explain what it means. As a closing to the Nits de Festa, on August 14, if the weather doesn’t prevent it and God doesn’t intervene, Chimo Bayo and Kuve will perform.

Benidorm, a city open all year round to tourism of all ages and conditions, also has its purely August agenda. The disappointment of the Low Festival tries to be remedied with the so-called Sky Fest, a series of performances throughout the month among which Taburete stands out on the 5th, need I say more. But there will be plenty of plans in the city that never sleeps. Remember Terra Mítica? The theme park from whose heights you can dominate an impressive panorama of the city of skyscrapers not only offers daytime entertainment. In its Summer Nights (yes, in English, for some reason the British are the majority), it offers a nighttime experience in the Iberia area where music, entertainment, and the summer atmosphere allow enjoying the park at dusk.
