The Valencian government resolves aid for DANA victims: 80,000 euros per deceased

The Generalitat Valenciana will begin to pay “in the coming weeks” the agreed compensations, of 80,000 euros per deceased – which is distributed among the beneficiaries who prove their right -, for the victims of the dana. This was explained this Friday at a press conference from Alicante, where the Consell met, by the third vice president and Minister of Environment, Infrastructure, Territory and Recovery, Vicente Martínez Mus, who explained that the Valencian government has now completed the management of these aids with the granting of a total of 469 subsidies for a total amount of 17.28 million euros. Of the 231 recognized victims, only the families of 216 deceased victims have applied for it. In the rest of the cases, no application has been submitted by possible beneficiaries, explains the Consell.

According to the Consell, these are not intended to “compensate for irreparable damage such as the loss of a human life, but rather to provide economic support that helps mitigate the difficulties that many families have had to face and contribute to their economic stability,” in the words of the commissioner for Recovery, Raúl Mérida.

The aids stem from Decree 23/2026, of February 20, of the Consell, which established an amount of 80,000 euros per deceased victim among the beneficiaries who prove their right according to the order established in the regulations. They were first announced by the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, in the plenary session of the Corts Valencianes 16 months after the tragedy and he argued that he wanted to take “one more step to contribute to the damages of an unprecedented catastrophe, it is justice.”

However, the victims did not receive the aid well and the three major associations responded with a joint statement saying that “reparation is not limited to material compensations.” They demanded “institutional responsibility, transparency in management and, above all, learning from what happened to prevent it from happening again.” And they added that “the dignity of the victims is not for sale” in a document signed by the Associació de Víctimes de la DANA 29 d’Octubre de 2024, the Associació de Víctimes Mortals de la DANA 29-O and the Asociación Damnificados por la DANA de l’Horta Sud de Valencia.

The central government also proposed aids for the deceased and its latest update sets the amount allocated to these aids for death or disability at 14.9 million euros.
