Pedro Sánchez was left alone yesterday in the Congress defending his Government’s management in Ceuta, for two main reasons: first, because it is difficult to support the position the Executive has taken in this crisis, and second, which is the worst for the PSOE, because the groups that supported him in the investiture have long since begun to distance themselves from Sánchez, as they do not want to be dragged down with his fall. If yesterday’s debate had taken place at the beginning of the legislature, it is possible that the socialist loneliness would not have been so evident. But yesterday, more or less, everyone saw the Government’s credit exhausted and began to resign themselves to a victory of the right.

The symbolic gesture of the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, refusing to applaud Sánchez’s announcement that they were going to publish all intelligence reports on the crisis is further proof that goes along the same line of detachment.
Sánchez tried yesterday to be more empathetic with the people of Ceuta than he was in the only interview granted during this crisis – last Monday to the Ser network – and tried to distance himself more from the Moroccan authorities, but the damage was already done. The Spanish president gave more education on the need to weave a prudent foreign policy in such a difficult context. The problem is that tempers are very high and public opinion is not in the mood for these diplomatic details. Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s argument was to accuse him directly of being a victim of blackmail by Morocco. It is clear that the Alaouite regime holds all the cards and Sánchez cannot afford speeches as aggressive with Rabat as those the PP makes today from the opposition.

The socialist president will be haunted by his decision to disappear from the media spotlight during August, while the autonomous city lived a situation of chaos and insecurity. And surely this image is unfair because, if there is a politician who has shown great capacity for work and dedication, it is him. But his long holidays of 2026 will be remembered.
