Among the many reactions generated by Spain’s victory in the World Cup, one of the most emotional has perhaps been that of Iñaki Williams. The Athletic Club forward, an international player for Ghana, has dedicated heartfelt words to his younger brother, Nico Williams, who is part of the team that yesterday defeated Argentina in the final and who was in fact the author of a commendable headed assist to Ferran Torres, allowing him to score the only goal of the match.
The tournament has not been easy at all for the Spanish international. After a season marked by injuries with Athletic Club, the winger suffered a new physical setback during the last group stage match against Uruguay and, at first, everything indicated that he would not be able to play any more matches in the championship.
After that injury caused by a hard tackle from Nicolás de la Cruz in the final minutes of the match, the player himself shared a message on his social networks describing the moment as “one of the worst days of my life.” However, his recovery ended up being much faster than expected and he was able to reappear for a few minutes in the quarterfinals against Belgium.
Thus, and following the World Cup victory, Iñaki Williams wanted to pay tribute to his brother through an emotional message published on X, where he highlights not only his sporting success but also the meaning it has for many immigrant families: “You have made millions of immigrants, like our parents, feel proud that their future children may one day live what you have lived. You have made millions of Spaniards empathize with our story, which is not only ours but that of all the people who leave everything behind in search of a better future. You have touched the sky with your fingers and have shown that, with work and effort, everything is possible.”

The story of the Williams brothers truly transcends the sporting realm. Originally from Ghana, their parents crossed the Sahara Desert on foot and barefoot to emigrate to Spain in 1994, she then pregnant with Iñaki. Due to family circumstances, the older brother has taken care of the younger since they were children.
Iñaki’s message, in short, focuses on the importance of integration and recognition of these immigrants, and perhaps serves to remind some that diversity is also part of a country’s identity, whether Spain or France. Both have suffered and reported episodes of racism in football stadiums on numerous occasions.
