Pedro Sánchez remains in charge of the Government for another day, but external pressure to wear him down continues. There is no day of peace. The spokesperson for Junts in Madrid, Miriam Nogueras, went a step further yesterday and stated that “we expect nothing more than President Sánchez calling elections.” This aligns with what the PNV leader, Aitor Esteban, has expressed these days, for whom the legislature “has already come to an end” and calls for general elections this year.

It is possible that both parties agreed on this same discourse in the secret meeting held by leaders of the two formations in Zaragoza a few days ago. In that meeting, PNV and Junts decided to publicly break ties with the Government, which can be translated into not voting in favor of any Executive proposal in Congress from now on. Until now, only Junts has spoken so categorically.
However, neither of the two groups showed willingness to support a motion of no confidence that the PP might present, whether it is a normal one or what is called an instrumental one, in which the winning candidate commits to calling elections immediately. And in Madrid, the rumor of the white knight is circulating again, which we already explained here in October 2025: an instrumental motion of no confidence, which would allow an independent candidate to access the presidency of the government with the votes of PP, Vox, and Junts, and which would only serve to call elections.

This option is officially denied by all parties involved, at least until today. No one knows what might happen in the coming days if judicial and police activity remains so active. The PP continues to hesitate to present the motion of no confidence if it does not have guaranteed enough votes, and some within the party think there is no need to rush because the socialist wear is growing over time and they just have to wait for it to fully explode. And Sánchez, meanwhile, continues to live day by day in the Moncloa Palace. Another day at the office.
