New teachers' strike on June 9, coinciding with the Pope's visit to Barcelona

After Catalan teachers rejected the education agreement and amidst the open conflict between teachers and the Department of Education, the Ustec and CGT unions have called a new strike day in Catalonia on June 9, coinciding with the first day of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Barcelona and also with the start of the university entrance exams.

Both organizations announced this Friday this new day of strike as part of the mobilizations carried out by teachers to demand labor and salary improvements, after the ‘no’ prevailed in the consultation launched among the collective regarding the pre-agreement reached with the Generalitat.

Spokespersons for Ustec and CGT explained, in statements to journalists, that the rejection of the pre-agreement forces them to keep the protests alive, which seek to “block Catalonia”.

Ustec, the majority union among teachers and which had campaigned for a ‘yes’ to the pre-agreement, unlike CGT, has assured that negotiations with the Department of Education must take place “within the framework of the strike committee”.

In addition to these two unions, CNT and COS are calling for a strike on June 9.
