Madrid has climbed 11 places in the global quality of life ranking featured in the report Mapping the World’s Prices 2026 prepared by Deutsche Bank Research Institute.

Barcelona is more convenient for getting around by public transport
The capital of Spain ranked 16th in this latest edition, eleven places above the position it held in 2020, allowing it to be in the top 20 for global quality of life and ahead of benchmark cities such as London, Paris, or New York. The top positions in the ranking are occupied by Geneva, Zurich, and San Francisco.
Barcelona’s trend moves in the opposite direction, losing three places and falling back to position 43.
The German bank’s report analyzes 31 indicators as varied as monthly salary, the price per square meter in the center of the 69 cities analyzed, down to details such as the cost of a beer or a cappuccino.

The Catalan City has fallen to 43rd place
In that analysis of the only two Spanish cities appearing in the ranking, Madrid also slightly outperforms Barcelona in terms of salaries. The capital of Spain is two places ahead, at 41, compared to Barcelona which is at 43.
In general terms, Madrid is a more expensive city than Barcelona. Although the Catalan City offers one of the cheapest monthly transport passes. This places it at 56th compared to Madrid’s 35th. Regarding beers, Barcelona is a more affordable step than Madrid ($1.40, compared to $1), and if the option is cappuccino, Barcelona offers it much cheaper, at $2.80 compared to the $3.11 you have to pay in Madrid.
