A gunman broke into the archaeological zone of Teotihuacán (Mexico) this Monday and opened fire from the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. The attack leaves a provisional toll of two fatalities, a Canadian citizen, and the shooter himself, who reportedly took his own life after the detonations. Three other people have been injured and are receiving medical attention.

According to initial reports, the attacker —described by witnesses as a man in jeans, a plaid shirt, and a face mask— managed to bypass access controls to the tourist site, climb the monument, and shoot at visitors. At the crime scene, security services have seized a firearm, a bladed weapon, and several live cartridges.

The attack caused a stampede and numerous anxiety attacks among tourists in the area, according to local media reports. The Security Cabinet has confirmed the deployment of an emergency operation, cordoning off the area in coordination with the Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico and the National Guard, to secure the perimeter and clarify the motives of the attack.
