A couple consisting of a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman has been arrested by the local police of Alicante for keeping a girl of just over two and a half years old in conditions of abandonment. According to investigation sources, the intervention occurred last Tuesday at noon in a central car park in the capital after two passers-by observed the minor alone next to a car in manifestly unsanitary hygienic conditions.

Upon the arrival of the officers, the minor, born in October 2023 and whose surnames do not match those of the arrested man and woman, showed a visible state of abandonment with soiled diapers that had not been changed for a long time and a strong stench.
Police seized cash and mobile phones and arrested the adults
The girl was examined by ambulance paramedics and, after passing through the pediatrics department of the General Doctor Balmis hospital for an examination, has been transferred to the Antonio Fernández Valenzuela Provincial Home to remain provisionally in custody. The couple was found reclining in the front seats of the vehicle near the girl in a drowsy state, from which they took time to recover, and in possession of several containers of prescription medication.

In a subsequent search inside the car, 7,500 euros in cash were seized from them, in addition to 5,760 Swiss francs (about 6,200 euros) and mobile phones. The couple is of Algerian nationality and was transferred to a healthcare facility to, once recovered, be arrested for a crime of child abandonment.
Alicante’s Security Councillor, Julio Calero, has congratulated the Local Police officers for their actions, “which have prevented what could have been an irreparable tragedy,” and has described as “abominable” what “some people can do against defenseless children.”
