The Spanish Government proposes Yolanda Díaz to lead the International Labour Organization (ILO). This was a possibility that had been speculated about in recent weeks, especially due to the dedication that the current second vice-president and Minister of Labour was displaying within the scope of this organization, and today it has been made official.

The President of the Government announced it on social media, stating that “it is an honour to announce Yolanda Díaz’s candidacy to lead the ILO. For the first time, a woman and our country would be at the helm of this fundamental institution for the defence of decent work and social justice.” He also added that Díaz is an excellent candidate due to her experience and her vocation for consensus.
If elected, Díaz would be the first Spanish woman and also the first woman to lead the ILO, a United Nations organization specialized in the world of labour, which brings together governments, employer organizations, and trade unions.

In June, during an intervention at the ILO in Geneva, she declared that the organization was in crisis, indirectly pointing to a need for renewal. Shortly after, the first reports emerged pointing to a possible candidacy, which has now been confirmed.
