The musician Joan Roca, bassist and founder of the group Antònia Font, passed away this morning at the age of 51, leaving the musical scene of the island of Mallorca in deep shock. It is a hard blow for a band that has been central to the culture and music of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.

Roca founded Antònia Font in 1997 alongside Pau Debon, Joan Miquel Oliver, Jaume Manresa, and Pere Debon. The group announced its dissolution in 2013 to “concentrate on personal projects.” However, in 2021, the band announced its return after years of silence and scheduled several live performances over the following years.
Roca’s bass was always an essential part of a group characterized by its pop tone and fantastic lyrics, covering diverse themes such as island life, science fiction, and cinematic references.
Over the years, the group’s musical career has garnered several awards, such as the Catalan Album of the Year for the album A Rússia and the National Music Award of Catalonia in 2008.
Roca’s passing represents a hard blow to the musical culture of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, which loses one of the musicians who, along with the group Antònia Font, created a unique and influential musical identity on the island.
