The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, stated that his Administration is considering the possibility of ordering the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he attends the UN General Assembly next September.

In an interview with The New York Times, Mamdani indicated that he is in an “active conversation” with the city’s Legal Department to determine if he has the authority for the Police Department to detain the leader.
“I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu’s place is in The Hague,” said the Big Apple mayor this week on ‘The Interview’, a New York Times program, referring to the headquarters of the United Nations International Court of Justice.
Mamdani also pointed out that he is a “war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court.”

“It is an opinion shared by many, precisely because of the consequences of his actions over the past few years,” added Mamdani, who clarified that they will act according to what the law allows in New York City and that they will not draft their own laws for this purpose.

During his campaign last year, Mamdani told the same newspaper that he would order the Police Department to arrest Netanyahu.
For his part, the Israeli prime minister—who is seeking re-election in Israel—referred to the mayor of New York’s arrest threat during a recent radio appearance, stating that he was not worried, and accused the mayor of supporting Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls a significant part of Gaza.
Meanwhile, Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, accused Mamdani this Saturday of not focusing enough on the growing antisemitism in New York City.
“Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu will come to New York, proudly address the United Nations General Assembly, and present himself to the world to expose the truth of Israel and its unwavering right to defend its citizens,” Danon said in a statement.
