Elsa Pataky's 50 years: a life in film and a ‘wild’ family

Elsa Pataky (Madrid, 1976) was not content with being the pretty face of Al salir de clase. Daughter of a Spanish biochemist and a Romanian advertiser, she experienced the fortune of a childhood with two cultures and the sorrow of her parents’ separation at four years old. The surname she signs with was taken from her maternal grandmother and the vocation of her life, from her grandfather, the Romanian actor Mircea Medianu. She combined her ambition as an actress with a plan B and studied Journalism at CEU San Pablo University while training in Dramatic Arts.

She debuted in front of the camera as Jordi Estadella’s hostess on the program El Semáforo (TVE) and playing Raquel Alonso in Al salir de clase (Telecinco) launched her to fame. From that late 90s series came Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Lucía Jiménez, Miguel Ángel Muñoz, Leticia Dolera, Alejo Sauras, Pilar López de Ayala, and even Carlos Sobera, among others.

The passport that managing five languages – English, Italian, and French, in addition to Spanish and Romanian – gave her opened the doors to European productions before Hollywood noticed her. If she had to highlight a special moment in her career, it would be the summer of 2003, with three almost simultaneous premieres: El furgónAtraco a las 3… y media and Beyond Re-Animator. Elsa Pataky became an overnight media phenomenon.

The screen loved her and so did advertising: in 2005 she participated in the Guía Campsa and in 2008, in the international campaign for Time Force watches alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Since then, brands like Stradivarius, Vitesse, Swarovski GHD, Women’s Health, Giioseppo, Biotherm, and El Corte Inglés, among others, have claimed her image. Even Tourism Australia, the department that promotes tourism in the country where she has lived for more than ten years.

Her leap to America came in 2011, with Fast Five: the character of agent Elena Neves placed her in the global imagination of the Fast & Furious saga, in which she participated in four installments. More recently, in 2024, she surprised with her performance of two different roles in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where her husband, Chris Hemsworth, also appears.

Elsa’s sentimental biography is very calm: she had a stable relationship with the pilot Fonsi Nieto between 1999 and 2004 and then dated the French actor Michaël Youn, whom she met filming Iznogoud. She stole the heart of Adrien Brody – whom she met in the film Giallo – to the point that the American actor gave her a castle in New York. They were together for three years. After a brief relationship with Olivier Martínez, in 2010 the man of her life appeared: a representative with mutual friends introduced her in Los Angeles to Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor who has portrayed the Norse god Thor for the Marvel factory.

Both would later explain that the love at first sight was instant, as Mecano sang. Over time, the couple has formed a family with their three children: India Rose (14) and the twins Tristan and Sasha (12). Since 2015 they have lived in Byron Bay (Australia), where they decided to settle to raise the children away from the media spotlight and in contact with nature. True to that lifestyle, they celebrated the actress’s 50th birthday surrounded by wild landscapes. “Happy birthday to the eternally adventurous, fun-loving one, who always makes life a party and, moreover, is gorgeous,” her husband dedicated to her on social media this Saturday.

A contact with nature that, living in the middle of such a wooded area in Australia, does not precisely mean going hiking. On her social networks, the actress, who frequently walks barefoot with her children around the house, has posted numerous examples of how to deal with huge tarantulas and threatening lizards as well as getting fond of larger snakes, which she faced in Snakes on a Plane.
