Adriana Gannon left this Friday rather disappointed from the meeting convened by the City Council and the Generalitat to explain to the roughly 300 evicted residents of the Sant Gervasi-La Bonanova neighborhood in Barcelona, ten days ago due to the appearance of a large sinkhole caused by the extension works of the L9, when they will be able to return to their homes. Some, the few, the neighbors and merchants of the two buildings farthest from the said sinkhole, will be able to return to their homes and businesses this Monday. At least that is the plan of the administrations.

The future of the rest, of the tenants of the other six buildings, of those whose apartments are in the zero zone of this disaster, next to the hole that early in the morning on July 7 swallowed the bathroom of the Verona pizzeria, on Teodora Lamadrid and Rubinstein streets, is more uncertain. Their return will occur as the Generalitat technicians finish injecting cement into the subsoil and verify several times the stability of the land and also of the buildings. Meanwhile, the tunnel boring machine Hospi remains stopped so as not to alter the records.
“We want to be 150% sure,” emphasizes the Government delegate in Barcelona
“Those at numbers 56 and 58 on Sant Gervasí de Cassoles street have been told that next week they will be able to return to their apartments, and those at 54 shortly after – detailed the affected person named Adriana in the gardens of the Vil·la Florida civic center, where the meeting of those affected with the administrations took place –. After all, these are the buildings farthest from the said sinkhole. But those of my building, those at 4 Rubinstein, have already been told that until next Friday they will not be able to tell us anything concrete, and that most likely then they will tell us that we will spend another three weeks out of the house.”

Meanwhile, the foundation work of the said sinkhole that swallowed the bathroom of the Verona pizzeria continues, as can be seen in a video that the administrator of this business posted on social networks. “The truth is that I still don’t know when we will be able to reopen the business – added Domingo Finez – but I’m finally starting to see green shoots. “At least everything points to the fact that in the meantime the eight workers of the business will receive their full salary, and not just 70%. For me, that is very important.”

“We want to be 150% sure,” emphasized the Government delegate in Barcelona, Pilar Díaz. Ramon Ramírez, general director of Mobility Infrastructures of the Generalitat, highlighted that the latest cracks appearing these days in some apartments are not worrisome, that they are the result of movements in recent days, and that they have already been able to check the condition of 88 of the 93 affected homes. “We also structurally reviewed the eight affected buildings,” added the technician. “All this is a matter of weeks,” concluded the Government delegate.

“Well, let’s see how many there are – Adriana resumed –… at first they told us it would be a matter of days and then… Let’s see when those of us who live closest to the sinkhole return.” Adriana has already accepted that she will not celebrate her 70th birthday at home on the 28th, that like about sixty other people she will continue to be housed in a hotel provided by the Generalitat. “For a few days it’s not bad, but so many… On weekends they don’t provide food, there are people who have to hire babysitters so as not to leave the children alone… On Tuesday they will tell us what to do about the expenses. At least the firefighters accompany you home when you need something.”
