Trump’s former national security advisor pleaded guilty to a criminal charge of retaining classified documents and misusing them by disseminating them among acquaintances to later use them in his memoir. Should the judge accept his plea, the possible sentence ranges from zero to 60 months. He also agreed to pay a fine of 2.25 million dollars, according to various sources familiar with the matter.

Bolton, now a staunch critic of the current US president, was accused last year of 18 charges related to the handling of sensitive government information which, according to prosecutors, he shared with two family members (wife and daughter) through diary-like annotations over a seven-year period and for possible use in a book he was writing about his experience in the Trump administration, which he left due to clashes with the president.

Trump requested John Bolton’s arrest after the publication of his memoir, in which he harshly criticized the president

Trump long demanded that Bolton be arrested for that memoir he published in 2020, The Room Where It Happened, which was very critical of the president’s work. For Trump, his former collaborator should go to jail for the classified information that appears in those pages.

In October, he had pleaded not guilty, but he is now expected to present the plea agreement on June 26 at a hearing before the federal district court in Maryland.

The court record describes the procedure as a new arraignment. According to these sources, the agreement does not charge Bolton with any misconduct related to the publication of his book, nor with having taken classified documents to his home or having shared them with media outlets or foreign adversaries. They also indicated that he intends to take responsibility for his actions.

A federal grand jury formally indicted the former advisor in mid-October on eight counts of transmitting national defense information and ten counts of retaining national defense information. The case progressed slowly due to special procedures related to the handling of classified information in that judicial process.

Bolton, a Republican and considered a hawk in foreign policy, a staunch supporter of forcing regime change in Iran, held various high-level positions in the US government for four decades.
