Starting gun for the new Grifols plant in Lliçà de Vall. The president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, laid the first stone of the facilities this Wednesday, which will begin operating in 2030. The Catalan blood derivatives company will add this complex to the one it already has in Parets del Vallés to create a biotechnological hub of 25 hectares that will have more than 3,700 employees. Of these jobs, 400 will be newly created.

According to Grifols, the Lliçà de Vall plant will allow the company to increase its plasma fractionation capacity by three million liters per year “to meet the demand of more than 300,000 European patients who depend on these treatments.” The plant will represent an investment of 160 million euros in a first phase. The center will also have logistics operations, an analysis laboratory, and warehouses, as well as a new space for Grifols Engineering.

Alongside Sánchez, the event was also attended by the Minister of Industry, Jordi Hereu; the Minister of Research and Universities of the Generalitat, Núria Montserrat; the mayor of Lliçà de Vall, Xavier Castillejo; the delegate of the Spanish Government in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto; the president of the Barcelona Chamber, Josep Santacreu; and the president of Foment del Treball, Josep Sánchez Llibre. Representing Grifols were the vice president of the board of directors, Raimon Grifols, and the directors Victor Grifols Deu, Albert Grifols Coma-Cros, and Tomás Dagá.

In his speech, Sánchez stated that this new plant will represent “a qualitative leap” for Grifols and emphasized the importance of the pharmaceutical and biotechnological sector to strengthen European “strategic autonomy.” The president assured that his government will continue to support them, within its Pharmaceutical Industry Strategy and the draft law on medicines and medical devices.

For his part, Raimon Grifols stated that laying this first stone “symbolizes Grifols’ will to continue growing from the territory, with an industrial vision at the service of patients.” “From Vallès Oriental, where we have been developing industrial activity for more than five decades, we continue building,” said the executive.

The project, designated strategic by the Generalitat, has been designed as a facility based on a smart factory model, and the company plans to cover 100% of operations with electricity from renewable sources. In this regard, Grifols is also studying integrating a biogas plant that could cover up to 30% of the natural gas demand.
