Judge David Maman Benchimol, who is investigating the complaint against the former Deputy Operational Director (DAO) of the National Police, José Angel González, for alleged sexual assault of a subordinate, spoke about the “advantages” given to women who report to the courts and who are “hunting for the order,” according to laSexta.

The Atresmedia network has accessed the video of a presentation organized by the Madrid Bar Association, in which the head of Madrid’s Court of Violence against Women No. 8 criticizes women who report abuse or “brainwash” their children.
In that talk, which dealt with “Criteria of competence in criminal and civil matters,” the judge states that “many” complaints “don’t seem to make much sense” because they are “hunting for the order” (of protection). “If I’m going to take 24 hours to get a protection order, why would I wait months?” explains the judge, who criticizes that “so many advantages” have been granted to women to file complaints. “They are given free legal assistance even if they have a million euros in their account, they are given a public defender as soon as they walk in… but what do they lose, what do they lose?” he continues. The magistrate suggests that the process “becomes eternal” and meanwhile “the mother brainwashes” the child and “progressively separates them from the father.” “And then, it’s very difficult to recover that lost time,” he adds.
According to La Sexta, that talk was given on February 18, one day after the woman who reported former DAO José Ángel González appeared before him to ratify the complaint. It also happens that the judge refused to grant the ex-DAO’s victim the requested protection order.

The Minister of Health, Mónica García, in statements to journalists, stressed this Thursday that those words are “of impressive gravity and sexism.” “This is what must be fought: sexism is installed in our society and in our institutions,” she added. In her opinion, hearing those words from a judge “is more worrying, because he would be the one who should ensure that this sexism does not permeate our society.”
For his part, the complainant’s lawyer, Jorge Piedrafita, expressed his disagreement with those “unfortunate” words and stated: “If, during the course of the investigation, any arbitrary conduct due to sexist bias is observed, this lawyer will be obliged to request recusal in defense and protection of his client, a victim of sexual assault in a context of violence against women.”
