The average benefit for retirees under the general scheme amounts to 1,731.70 euros in May, according to data published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations. Since the beginning of the year, with the revaluation linked to inflation, the figure has remained above the 1,700 euro mark. The figure is much higher than that of workers coming from the self-employed scheme, who average 1,060 euros per month.
Between the two there is a difference of 672 euros per month, which amounts to up to 9,400 euros annually, with fourteen payments.
When averaging all schemes – general, self-employed, maritime, and coal mining – in Spain the average retirement pension stands at 1,572 euros per month, 4.4% more than a year ago. The highest is that of the coal scheme, where on average 3,004 euros are received.
Pensioners entering the system from the general scheme do so with a pension of 1,754.92 euros, similar to last year’s figure. The inclusion of workers with longer careers and better salaries has been pushing averages up for years, which in turn puts pressure on the system.

If all types are taken into account – retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood, and in favor of relatives – the system’s average pension is 1,370.7 euros, 4.6% more than the previous year.
Expenditure to cover pension payments set a new record again in May, with a disbursement of 14,365.8 million euros, 6% more than in the same month last year. With this amount, a total of 10.48 million pensions are paid to 9.47 million people.
