An inmate at the Quatre Camins prison (Barcelona) died this Thursday following an alleged assault by his cellmate, which is being investigated by the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Generalitat’s Penitentiary Services.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice this Thursday, Penitentiary Services reported an incident that occurred Thursday night at the Quatre Camins penitentiary center, in which an inmate “has allegedly died following a non-knife assault by his cellmate.”
“The center’s professionals activated the corresponding action protocols and intervened immediately. Medical services attended to the inmates and emergency services and the competent judicial authority were informed,” they add.
The Mossos d’Esquadra and penitentiary services have initiated the corresponding actions to clarify the circumstances of the events, and the investigation and autopsy will determine the origin and circumstances of the incident; meanwhile, the center’s management is in contact with the deceased’s family and “the supports foreseen in these cases are being offered.
Both inmates had no history of incompatibility, the department assures.
