The rains that watered much of Catalonia on the afternoon of this Wednesday have left more than 40 liters per square meter in half an hour in the Gironès, according to records from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat). The agency has issued an orange warning for observed intense rains exceeding this threshold in the area and has alerted that the showers are very stationary. In some cases, they have been accompanied by intense hail in Girona, with stones up to two centimeters in diameter.

The Bombers have recorded about thirty services between three and six in the afternoon, mostly in Girona, due to leaks and water accumulations. In Fornells de la Selva, 48.6 liters were recorded in 30 minutes. Meteocat has indicated that thunderstorm activity has also focused on points in Vallès Oriental and Occidental, Alt Penedès, and Baix Llobregat.

Early in the afternoon, rain gauges showed records such as the 48.6 liters mentioned in Fornells de la Selva, 27.4 in La Bisbal de Empordà, 26.1 in Banyoles, or 21.2 in Cassà de la Selva. In the northwest, there was also a notable figure, such as the 22.9 liters in Vielha.
At a quarter past six in the afternoon, the emergency management agency reported that, due to persistent rains in the Girona counties, the Agència Catalana de l’Aigua has issued a hydrological risk warning in the Ter basin. The alert threshold of the Terri river in Cornellà de Terri was exceeded with a maximum flow of 17 cubic meters per second, although later the water volume dropped to 5.22.
Protecció Civil and Meteocat have asked this Wednesday to limit travel as much as possible and to follow the evolution of the rain episode this Wednesday and Thursday early morning, due to the possibility of locally strong or torrential showers.
In the morning, the Deputy Director of Prevention of Protecció Civil, Joan Ramon Cabello, explained that the Inuncat plan is activated in alert phase and recommended that, if travel is necessary, it should preferably be done on main roads and low areas, fords, and crossings with rivers and streams should be avoided. They do not rule out sending an ES-Alert if a dangerous situation for the public is detected.

For his part, the head of the Meteocat Prediction Area, Santi Segalà, explained that warnings reach level 4 out of 6 and that in some points more than 40 liters per square meter can be exceeded in 30 minutes and 90 liters in three hours. Precipitation will have an irregular distribution and can fall very intensely in small areas, while in nearby points it practically does not rain.
Meteocat places one of the highest risk areas on the coast and pre-coast between Camp de Tarragona and Barcelona, with special attention to Penedès, Garraf, Baix Llobregat, Tarragonès, and points in Vallès and Barcelonès. Intense showers are also expected in the interior of the Girona counties and in points of Central Catalonia, especially around the eastern Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees.
The Catalan meteorological service also forecasts that this Thursday there will be some showers on the central coast, and that in the afternoon there will be some downpours in the eastern third. Temperatures will drop everywhere.
On Friday another front will cross, and on Saturday there could still be some showers, but on Sunday the sun will prevail if Meteocat’s forecasts are fulfilled, then with progressively rising thermometers.
