NATO has withdrawn the security clearance of a Spanish Navy officer stationed at the Alliance base in Northwood, northwest of London, due to his relationship with an alleged Russian spy, reported the British newspaper The Telegraph and confirmed to EFE by Navy sources.

The officer, who was serving at the headquarters of the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), began a relationship at the end of 2024 with a woman with dual British and Polish nationality, but who was born in Russia, whom he had met through the Tinder app.
NATO security services launched an investigation due to suspicions that the woman might be in contact with Russian espionage, an investigation that ended months later with the Spanish military officer’s access pass to the base being revoked, his security clearance withdrawn, and his return to Spain.
According to the British newspaper, the woman even entered the base as the officer’s companion for a Christmas party.

Spanish Navy sources confirmed to EFE this “isolated incident” and the military’s return to Spain, although they did not specify his destination or whether he remains active or, as The Telegraph states, has already moved to the reserves.
A NATO maritime command spokesperson, asked by EFE about this matter, said that “MARCOM does not make statements on personnel matters. NATO,” he added, “maintains its full commitment to protecting allied personnel, safeguarding classified information, and maintaining the trust and security on which the Alliance depends.”
