The PNV always counts

Spanish politics has been very turbulent for a few years. New actors appear with dazzling force and shortly after disappear with the same energy with which they arrived. One that always remains steadfast is the PNV. Party leaders and lehendakaris may change, but the influence of Sabin Etxea (the PNV headquarters) on Spanish politics remains undeniable. That is why it is good to listen to the voice of the current lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, who shares his opinion in an interview with La Vanguardia about a world that seems to be fading – the socialist one – and another that is coming strong – the popular one.

Pradales makes it clear that the PNV is a dialoguing party and will seek agreements “regardless of who the Prime Minister is and their political color,” but he already puts a bandage before the wound with the warning that autonomous self-government will “darken a lot if the PP governs with Vox.”

This is the big issue that worries many nationalist sectors both in Euskadi and Catalonia. In the last general elections of 2023, the fear of this PP and Vox government facilitated the recovery of the socialist vote. It remains to be seen if the same will happen in the next ones. For now, the strategy of both right-wing parties is much more sensible than three years ago. As Javier Gallego explains well today in our newspaper, Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Santiago Abascal have strengthened their relationship and avoid any kind of confrontation. You only have to look at the regional governments where both formations share management areas and no sign of tension has been detected. It seems that both have learned the lesson and do not want to repeat the mistakes of 2023.

Pradales sees Núñez Feijóo “obsessed with Vox and the M-30 ecosystem,” but it seems that all is part of the same strategy to reach power in the most direct way possible and then the differences will be resolved. In any case, the PP leader must bear in mind that governing with Vox and the PNV at the same time will not be possible.
