Podemos MEP and former Equality Minister Irene Montero announced this Saturday her intention to lead a left-wing candidacy in the upcoming general elections after Podemos holds “open primaries for everyone.”

“I want to be your candidate, but I don’t want to be just any candidate, I want to be your candidate with open primaries for everyone in which the whole team can be elected,” the MEP stated at an event in Madrid.
Regarding the primaries, Podemos’ number 2 added that not only people from the party but anyone who wants to participate can run. Montero announced this innovative format at the end of her speech at the event held under the slogan ‘Peace, home, and work,’ which their leaders have been repeating in recent weeks to summarize their defense of “the basics.”
In April last year, Podemos launched Montero as their figure to lead a ‘purple’ candidacy for the general elections, extending an open hand to other sectors of the left and civil society. A challenge the former minister took on to revive a “strong” left that is not subordinate to the PSOE. However, the party has yet to define its alliance policy.
Now, Montero will again make visible her intention to lead the alternative left in the upcoming elections in a context where the parties in the government of the minority partner (Movimiento Sumar, IU, Comuns, and Más Madrid) still lack a candidate to head the renewal of their coalition.
Podemos has also launched its primaries to choose candidates for the regional and municipal elections, a process in which the organization’s secretary general, Ione Belarra, will run to lead the list for the elections in the Community of Madrid with the goal of once again being a force with representation in the regional parliament.
