The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has once again called on the teachers who will start the school year this Tuesday with a new day of strike, to also “respect” the right to education and mobility. That is why he has asked them to make a “pause” in their protests to face a “serious debate” around the education model of Catalonia, and has announced a new program with which he intends to end the excessive heat that students face in schools.

In an interview on TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio, Illa admitted that in this open conflict with the teachers “we surely could have done things better” but, at the same time, he defended that “no one has put more resources than this Government (2.5 billion)”. Now, “the purpose is to open a debate about what education we want for the country” and for that, “the Government has an outstretched hand” and “will dedicate resources”.
But the president also wanted to make it clear that respect for the right to strike must be compatible with the right to education and mobility, so he asked, as did the councilor Esther Niubó, for “a pause” in the strike, “to talk and see what resources are needed for everything. “The ones who know best are the teachers; the families of Catalonia have the right for their children to be educated, and I ask for respect for this right and for that of mobility. Now then, Illa insisted that “the starting point must be clear”, and for that he recalled that “when I arrived, teachers were the third worst paid, now they are the third best paid” in Spain. In addition, “we have increased reception classrooms, we have dedicated more resources than anyone…” And now it is about talking about the education model of Catalonia”, that is, inclusive education, infrastructures, school autonomy, resources, evaluation… In short, Illa has called for “a serious debate”.
The head of the Government has also announced a school air conditioning plan that will be worked on with the municipalities and will be extended to residences. For now, the Executive “is studying” different ways of collaboration with private companies to carry out this adaptation, but the problem is significant, since in Catalonia, a quarter of educational centers are from before 1965 and have deficiencies in their infrastructure, as the president has admitted.
