The sound of muskets and the smell of gunpowder have once again taken over Béznar, in Granada, during the celebration of a tradition that spans nearly five centuries of history.
Every first weekend of September, around fifty musketeers roam this small town in the Lecrín Valley firing their weapons loaded with gunpowder to commemorate the fight of their ancestors against a rebellion.
To keep the tradition alive, participants use around 62 kilos of gunpowder during a celebration in which the sound of the drum accompanies the continuous musket shots.

The festival completely transforms Béznar, a town of barely a hundred inhabitants that during these days multiplies its population tenfold with the arrival of visitors.
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), the celebration of the Musketeers of Béznar keeps alive a tradition passed down from generation to generation for more than four and a half centuries.
