The PP manages to divide the left with its municipal calls in support of Ceuta

The Federation of Municipalities and Provinces has called for gatherings this evening at 8 p.m. in front of all municipal headquarters in Spain in support of Ceuta, which, precisely, celebrates its day today.

The call has the full support of the PP, which has an absolute majority in the Federation of Municipalities, and has managed to break the unity of the left-wing groups, which, in some cases, will participate in the gatherings and will even organize them in some of the municipalities they govern. It is not a large number of Town Halls nor very important municipalities but the division is significant.

However, this is not the only cause of confusion regarding this event because yesterday the Madrid Government Delegation issued a statement in which it said it did not authorize the holding of demonstrations organized by the municipalities insofar as, according to its argument, this function does not legally correspond to them. However, it clarified, this did not prevent the event from taking place but that it should have an institutional format.

The PP considered that the Delegation’s note was in fact a prohibition of the gathering and a considerable dispute was organized with the Popular Party. The truth is that the gatherings will take place despite this, and the PP tried to make the most of its status as promoter of a brand censored by the Government. A reproach that Isabel Díaz Ayuso did not miss.

Yesterday, the president of Ceuta, Juan Jesús Vivas, of the Popular Party, invited the citizens to join these gatherings because, he argued, in this crisis “what is at stake is the cause of Ceuta, which, ultimately, is the cause of all Spain” and linked the defense of this city with the defense of the entire Spanish territory.

Today it will be seen, throughout the day, what the capacity of these demonstrations to convene is. It should not be forgotten that they take place in a clearly pre-electoral context – the municipal elections are held next May – and in them not only the safeguarding of Ceuta is discussed, but also, in the background, the debate on the containment of immigration at the borders of Spain and Europe, a territory in which the PP and particularly Vox move with great ease while the left fails to hit the mark with its discourse.

The entire leadership of the Popular Party in full, with Alberto Núñez Feijóo at the head, will attend the call made by the City Council of the capital of Spain, while the headquarters of the Community of Madrid in Puerta del Sol will be lit up with the colors of the Ceuta flag.
