Germany evacuates more than 13,000 people to defuse a World War II bomb

Around 13,600 residents of the town of Wilhelmshaven, in northern Germany, will be evacuated this Tuesday following the discovery of an unexploded American bomb from World War II. The bomb, weighing 250 kilograms and equipped with two fuzes, was found during construction work at the city’s naval arsenal, and its deactivation requires an evacuation within a one-kilometer radius, according to the Police.

Specifically, the evacuation began this morning at 8:00 a.m. and affects the area covering the Südstadt neighborhood and the city center of the port city, as well as Heppens, which have already been fully evacuated.

Although more than 80 years have passed since the end of the war, these findings are common in Germany

For this purpose, three sports halls have been set up as emergency shelters, and bus services have been suspended from the start of the evacuation. Likewise, the city’s crisis management team, together with emergency services and the municipal transport company, will coordinate with nursing homes and care centers in the area and will assess whether it is also necessary to evacuate them.

These types of cases are not uncommon in Germany despite more than 80 years having passed since the conflict ended. In fact, the discovery of such bombs often occurs during construction work, as in this case, potentially leading to large evacuation operations.

One of the latest cases took place in mid-July in the town of Potsdam, southwest of Berlin. This resulted in the evacuation of around 6,500 residents there.
