The health of King Harald V of Norway is causing great concern in the country one week after the monarch was admitted to the Oslo University Hospital due to the side effects of the treatment he is receiving for his hemolytic anemia. In recent hours, the royal house has issued a statement informing citizens of a worsening of his health, which worsened over the weekend.

The 89-year-old sovereign remains hospitalized due to fluid accumulation caused by the cortisone he received, to which a bacterial blood infection has now been added. Even so, the institution has confirmed that his condition is stable and that, for the moment, he is responding favorably to the antibiotics administered by the medical team.

“His Majesty the King’s health worsened over the weekend. His Majesty is receiving antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection in the bloodstream,” the Norwegian royal house reported in this statement, also assuring that Harald V will remain at Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, until further notice.
In light of this, the monarch is on sick leave and his official schedule is paused while he recovers from the health setback. Amid this difficult situation, Prince Haakon is assuming his duties as regent and representing the monarchy as the heir to the throne.

This statement comes just days after the institution shared another in which the complications of King Harald were already evident. Last Friday, the Royal Palace of Oslo confirmed the cancellation of the monarch’s engagements for September 1 and 2, when he had planned a visit to Trøndelag. However, it seems the weekend was not favorable for his recovery, despite now responding well to treatment.
King Harald V has been hospitalized several times in recent years
In recent years, the king’s health has been under scrutiny on numerous occasions due to a series of hospitalizations. Harald V had to be admitted last February while on vacation in Tenerife with Queen Sonja due to an infection and dehydration that complicated his stay in the Canary Islands. Days later, he was discharged after returning to his country and resumed his official activities.
But in 2024, something similar happened when he was hospitalized during his vacation in Malaysia due to an infection and had to have a temporary pacemaker implanted. These health complications add to his knee ligament surgery in 2021, his heart valve replacement in 2020, and the removal of a bladder tumor in 2003.
