The east, center, and south of the peninsula, as well as the Balearic Islands, will experience “intense heat” and a “fully summery” atmosphere this weekend, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees in some places, although there will be very strong storms, even with hail, in interior areas.

After a thermal respite, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast today a new thermal rise across much of the country, with “very hot” nights where temperatures will not drop below 22 to 24 degrees in the center and south of the peninsula and in the Mediterranean area.
The spokesperson for that agency, Rubén Del Campo, indicated today that in the Mediterranean area an “intense feeling of mugginess due to high relative humidity” is expected. However, he adds that “there will be an increase in instability,” with locally strong storms and hail in the north and east over the weekend and the first days of next week.

At the same time, he warned of an increased fire risk, with “very high or extreme levels” in most of the country, also during the day of the eclipse on the 12th. In the Canary Islands, the days will be hot today and tomorrow, with more than 32 to 34 degrees in large areas of the islands and even 36 in the south of Gran Canaria. The trade wind will blow strongly although on Sunday it will lose some strength and temperatures will drop.

Aemet highlights for today the rise in temperatures, especially in the Cantabrian area, with a “very hot” atmosphere and thermometers that, in most of the country, will mark from 38 to 40 degrees in the Ebro Valley and much of the southern half, and more than 40° in points of Castilla la Mancha and the Guadalquivir Valley. It also forecasts showers with storms in the eastern interior, accompanied by hail and very strong wind gusts.
Saturday and Sunday
The weather will become more unstable this Saturday, especially in the north and east, where there will be showers and locally very strong storms and large hail. Specifically, this forecast applies to areas of the Eastern Cantabrian, Navarra, La Rioja, eastern Castilla y León, Aragón, Catalonia, and northern Valencian Community.
Temperatures will not experience major changes and will generally be slightly higher in the Cantabrian, according to the Aemet report. On Sunday, storms will form in the north and east, locally strong and with hail in the northeastern peninsula. Temperatures will drop in the Cantabrian and in the western half although they will continue to reach from 36 to 38 degrees in the east, center, and south of the peninsula and 38 to 40 degrees in the Ebro Valley, southern Castilla la Mancha, Andalusia, and points of Mallorca.

Next week
Del Campo has warned that the heat will be “intense” next week when temperatures could exceed 36 degrees during Monday and Tuesday.
Although in the east, center, and south of the peninsula, and also in the Balearic Islands, instability will lose ground, according to Aemet, it does not rule out that storms may form in the east.
Solar eclipse
Although Aemet will issue a special bulletin with meteorological information for the 12th starting today, Del Campo has anticipated that “it is likely to be a day with generally stable weather.”
The spokesperson does not rule out the formation of clouds from midday in mountain areas of the north and east of the peninsula as well as some isolated storm, although temperatures will be high.
