Educational strike: A historic demonstration of teachers marches through the streets of València

A large demonstration in support of the unified strike marches through the streets of València after five days of stoppages. Hundreds of teachers join from different districts of the city and from other towns and regions to the Plaza de San Agustín in València to walk, as they did on Monday, through the main streets of the capital demanding improvements in schools, a salary increase and, ultimately, “a sincere commitment” to the public education system.

Disappointed with the proposal presented yesterday by the Department of Education, they expect more and better next Monday at the new meeting to which they have been summoned. And they show it this Friday on the street, in a new show of strength that keeps the indefinite strike going, at least until the next meeting of the sectoral table. The unions acknowledge, as STEPV, the majority union, recognized yesterday, that it has been thanks to the mobilizations of recent months, “massively followed by teachers and the educational community,” that negotiations have been initiated.

In this regard, before starting the march, the STEPV Union Action Coordinator, Marc Candela, pointed out that this Friday’s march “is a call to the Department of Education, to the Valencian government that we do not want the pre-agreement from yesterday.” “Take note and come on Monday with a proposal or you will have us here,” said the union leader.

For his part, José Seco, regional president of CSIF, stated that today “will be a historic day,” but he wanted to emphasize that “it is also a sad day, we are here because no agreement has been reached.”

The chants of “consellera dimissió” and “educació pública i de qualitat” are two of the most shouted slogans in a march that proceeds slowly due to the large number of demonstrators.

This Friday families also support the indefinite strike maintained by the 5 unions of the sectoral table, STEPV, CSIF, UGT-PV, CCOO-PV, and ANPE. FAMPA-Valencia has encouraged families to participate this Friday in the demonstration demanding immediate measures from the Department of Education.

The Department, for its part, left the meeting yesterday satisfied. According to the Minister of Education, Culture and Universities, Carmen Ortí, the negotiation is “on the right track, that of dialogue.”

36% of teachers support the strike on the fifth day of protests

Teacher participation in the strike increased this Friday. According to data provided by the Department of Education, the percentage of strike participation at 1 p.m. was 35.64%. By provinces, the greatest support for the indefinite strike was in Valencia (39.64%), followed by Castellón (36.53%) and Alicante (30.64%).

Today’s march is also festive. More than 400 teachers, musicians from across the territory, have organized through WhatsApp and are playing during the march to enliven it. Xelo Valls, from CCOO-PV, referred to “the emotion” produced by the union and asks the Department “to listen to the cry of the teaching staff demanding dignity.”

Maite Tarazona, from UGT-PV, values the response to this five-day strike demonstration, with the support of families, and emphasizes that “if we have reached this point of no return” it is because Valencian education “is in such deplorable conditions that we urgently need help now. This must be solved immediately.”
