Traveling by plane is never a pleasant experience for a dog, as traditionally airlines allow pets to travel either under the front seat and inside a carrier (in the case of small animals) or in the plane’s cargo hold, isolated from their owner. However, the Italian company ITA Airways will launch next August a new service so that dogs can travel in a seat like any other passenger, as long as they do not exceed 30 kilograms in weight.

This measure, called Large Dog On Board, will allow larger dogs to travel in the cabin for a price of 95 euros, and will apply on some designated flights under certain limitations. In this regard, before booking the service, its availability will depend on the type of aircraft, whether there are already animals with prior reservations, and the operational conditions of the flight.

How does the service work?
On flights enabled for this service, a maximum of 2 dogs will be allowed in the cabin, one weighing more than 10 kg and up to 15 kg, and another weighing more than 15 kg and up to 30 kg. In this way, only two dogs per plane will be allowed to avoid inappropriate behavior and ensure a favorable experience for all passengers.
More specifically, on Airbus A220 planes, dogs will sit in the first or last row, on the left side of the cabin, occupying the window seat. The accompanying passenger must occupy the aisle seat, leaving the middle seat empty. On the other hand, on Airbus A319 and A320 planes, the companion must sit in the middle seat, while the aisle seat can be assigned to another passenger.

The airline also specifies that the dog must wear a muzzle, collar, leash, and a crash-tested harness to secure it to the seat belt throughout the flight. The animal must remain in the assigned area for the entire duration of its journey.
Passengers allergic to dogs or particularly sensitive to the presence of a dog must notify this before booking to “analyze possible travel alternatives, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis,” assures the airline. Guide or assistance dogs will have priority over other pets. The airline recommends booking the service at least 4 days before the flight departure.
