The Burgohondo fire, in Ávila, with more than 50,000 hectares burned, the worst recorded in Spain since records began, and the Madrid fire, with more than 25,000 hectares, have been perfectly visible from space.

The images recorded by the EUMETSAT Meteosat satellite from July 23 to 26 show how the smoke from the flames has spread to neighboring areas, moved by the wind: initially towards Castilla-León, then towards Aragón and then towards Andalusia and the Valencian Community, where it even joined the smoke generated by the fire in Vall d’Uixó, in Castelló.
This year, 200,000 hectares have already burned, an area six times larger than that burned during the same period in 2025, making 2026 the third worst year so far this decade, after 2022 and 2025.

It has also been the deadliest year, with 14 fatalities, the latest today, in the Los Gallardos fire, in Almería, which still has three victims hospitalized in serious condition.
