The Civil Section of the Madrid Court of First Instance has provisionally suspended the eviction of Paquita López Ruiz, an 82-year-old woman, initially scheduled for this Wednesday, from her home located on Santa Ana street, in the La Latina neighborhood of Madrid, pending public administrations offering her a housing alternative.

In a ruling, the magistrate-judge indicates that he has communicated the existence of the eviction procedure to the regional and local administrations competent in housing and social assistance for people in situations or at risk of social exclusion.
He details that he has addressed the competent Administrations so that they can verify the situation of vulnerability and, if it exists, present to the Court a proposal for decent housing for social rent, immediate care measures, as well as possible economic aid and subsidies from which the defendant may benefit, without having received a response.
The magistrate judge demands the urgent issuance of the requested report, which must be notified to this judicial body within a maximum period of ten days, provisionally suspending the eviction scheduled for this Wednesday.
Paquita moved into the home with her son Carlos in 1998 and, since then, they have paid the rent, which currently amounts to 1,150 euros per month, the La Chispera Neighborhood Association said in a statement.

About a hundred people had gathered in front of her home this morning to prevent the eviction. After learning of the suspension, they erupted in applause and hugs and shouts of “you are not alone.”
Visibly emotional, Paquita thanked the support received and assured that she felt represented by those who had gathered in front of her building. “I am the people of Madrid,” she said amidst applause, and asked “the City Council, the mayor, and all those who do not look out for the neighbors” to have “a little heart.”
